About the Department

The Chemistry Department of Women’s College was started in the year 2004 with the introduction of B. Sc (Physical Science) pass course. The first teachers in the Department were Sri. Arun Kr. Chowdhury and Late Kashinath Das. The Degree classes were started under the guidance of them and chemistry honours was introduced in 2010. New laboratory were set up for honours course in the year 2012. The Department has well-equipped separate laboratories for Pass and Honours students with class rooms for theory classes. Now Chemistry Department is upgraded under Star College Scheme funded by Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India. At present total 53 hons students are benefitted by this scheme and final semester students are engaged with hands’ on project work on some recent topics under the guidance of present teachers. Popular lectures, workshops and students’ seminar are organizing on regular basis. Equipments for different experiments included in the existing syllabus are procured from UGC fund and some new sanctioned equipment under DBT Star College Scheme will be procured soon. Three existing faculties are engaged with various innovative works for the development of the department as well as to enlighten the knowledge of their students.
